UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)

Background

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) sought to strengthen the energy resilience and sustainability of its UK bases as part of a wider strategy to decarbonise operations and enhance national energy security. In line with NATO’s target to equip all bases with microgrid “island systems” by 2035, the MoD engaged FlowGen to explore containerised, hybrid renewable systems capable of reducing reliance on diesel generators and improving operational autonomy.

Challenge

Military installations face complex energy challenges. Bases must maintain continuous power for critical systems while minimising exposure to fuel supply risks and environmental impact. The MoD required a solution that could:

  • Deliver reliable, off-grid renewable power in variable environments
  • Provide rapidly deployable and modular systems for flexible use across bases
  • Reduce diesel consumption and associated logistics risks
  • Integrate with existing infrastructure and enable secure, localised control

Solution

FlowGen deployed its Green Centre, a containerised microgrid integrating multiple renewable technologies within a single, mobile system. The installation at a UK military base comprised:

  • Wind Power: Two FlowGen 15 kW carbon-fibre turbines designed for high performance in low-wind conditions
  • Solar Power: 10 kWp photovoltaic array
  • Energy Storage: 30 kWh lithium-ion battery system housed within a standard 20-foot container
  • Optimisation Software: Real-time energy management and monitoring for predictive efficiency
  • Deployment Speed: Fully installed and operational within 48 hours, transportable via standard logistics vehicles

This installation forms part of the MoD’s ongoing initiative to test and roll out microgrids capable of providing self-sufficient energy systems across military infrastructure.

Results

  • Operational Impact: Supports EV charging infrastructure
  • Resilience: Provides secure, “islanded” energy independent of grid disruption
  • Sustainability: Significant reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with MoD Net Zero 2050 objectives

Benefits

  • Energy Security: Reliable, grid-independent power for mission-critical operations
  • Scalable & Deployable: Modular design adaptable across diverse operational theatres
  • Cost-Efficient: Reduced lifetime energy and maintenance costs
  • Strategic Alignment: Supports NATO and UK Defence Energy Transition strategies
  • Innovation Showcase: Demonstrates how hybrid renewable systems can operate effectively within the defence sector

Conclusion

FlowGen’s containerised Green Centre solution delivers a breakthrough in secure, sustainable, and mobile energy for the defence sector. By integrating wind, solar, and battery storage within a compact, flexible unit, the MoD has enhanced its operational energy resilience and reduced its environmental footprint — setting a benchmark for military energy infrastructure transformation.
