Port of Emden

Background

The Port of Emden sought to enhance its sustainability and energy resilience while supporting the transition to renewable energy. With growing operational demands and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, NPorts explored innovative solutions for clean, reliable power generation on-site.

Challenge

Ports face unique energy challenges, including high electricity consumption for lighting, gates, and vehicle charging, coupled with the need for scalable, low-footprint solutions. NPorts needed a system that could:

  • Generate renewable electricity on-site
  • Store energy efficiently for continuous operations
  • Support electric vehicle charging infrastructure
  • Be rapidly deployable and adaptable to changing needs

Solution

FlowGen delivered a Green Centre, a containerised hybrid microgrid solution, integrating multiple renewable technologies into a compact, flexible unit:

  • Wind Power: Two FlowGen 15 kW turbines mounted diagonally on a standard 40-foot shipping container
  • Solar Power: 10 kWp photovoltaic array
  • Energy Storage: 22 kWh battery system for consistent power supply
  • EV Charging: Integrated infrastructure for port vehicles
  • Scalability: Modular design allows easy deployment to other sites

Installed in February 2025 as part of the EU-funded INTERREG REDIIPorts program, the solution leverages the Port of Emden’s favourable wind conditions to maximise renewable energy output.

Results

  • Potential Annual Renewable Generation: Up to 45,000 kWh of electricity
  • Operational Impact: Powers the port’s main gate, lighting, and EV charging stations
  • Grid Contribution: Surplus energy fed into the local electricity grid
  • Sustainability: Significant reduction in carbon footprint and operational reliance on conventional energy

Benefits

  • Cost-Effective: Reduced energy costs and optimised resource use
  • Scalable & Portable: Easily deployed and adaptable to other industrial or port locations
  • Demonstration Model: Serves as a real-world example of integrating wind, solar, and storage in a compact system
  • Enhanced Reputation: Positions the Port of Emden as a leader in innovative and sustainable port operations

Conclusion

FlowGen’s Container Solution offers a flexible, efficient, and sustainable energy model for ports and industrial sites worldwide. By combining wind, solar, and storage in a single containerised system, NPorts has successfully enhanced energy resilience while demonstrating leadership in environmental responsibility.
