Munich Airport

Background

Munich Airport aimed to advance its sustainability agenda and support the transition to renewable energy while maintaining reliable operations. As part of its “Net Zero 2035” strategy, the airport sought innovative solutions to provide clean, resilient on-site power for electric vehicle (EV) charging and other operational needs.

Challenge

Airports face unique energy challenges, including high electricity consumption for EV charging, lighting, and ground operations, alongside the need for scalable and low-footprint solutions. Munich Airport required a system that could:

  • Generate renewable electricity on-site
  • Store energy efficiently to ensure continuous operations
  • Support EV charging infrastructure
  • Be rapidly deployable and adaptable to evolving operational requirements

Solution

FlowGen provided a Green Centre, a containerised hybrid microgrid solution, integrating multiple renewable technologies into a single, flexible unit:

Wind Power: Three FlowGen small-scale wind turbines mounted on a mobile container
Solar Power: Photovoltaic panels installed on the container roof
Energy Storage: Battery system capable of storing electricity for consistent power supply
EV Charging: Infrastructure to charge up to 4–6 electric cars per day
Scalability & Mobility: Modular, relocatable design suitable for various locations across the airport or other industrial sites

Installed in June 2024, the solution serves as a 12-month trial to evaluate performance in real-world airport conditions while contributing to Munich Airport’s sustainability goals.

Results

Annual Renewable Generation: Up to 200 kWh per day on sunny and windy days
Operational Impact: Powers EV charging stations in the car rental parking area
Grid Contribution: Potential to integrate surplus energy into the airport’s power grid
Sustainability: Supports Munich Airport’s Net Zero 2035 initiative by reducing carbon footprint and reliance on conventional energy sources

Benefits

Cost-Effective: Reduces energy costs and reliance on grid electricity
Scalable & Portable: Modular design allows redeployment and adaptation to other sites
Demonstration Model: Provides a real-world example of combining wind, solar, and storage in a compact, mobile system
Enhanced Reputation: Positions Munich Airport as a leader in innovative and sustainable airport operations

Conclusion

FlowGen’s Green Centre delivers a flexible, efficient, and sustainable energy model for airports and industrial sites. By combining wind, solar, and battery storage in a single mobile container, Munich Airport has strengthened energy resilience while demonstrating leadership in environmental responsibility.
